The interior beauty of Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is a wonderful island, not only due to its beaches, but also for the inside, full of places to discover. For first the interior of the island has a lot of nature, which can be seen by hiking excursions or by watching natural parks, such as the "Viera y Clavijo Botanical Park", also called "The Botanic Garden". This garden is the largest in Spain, and contains the flora of the Macaronesian islands, one of the most representative biodiversity hotspots worldwide.

Here we can find unique types of plants, such as “Drago”, a typical subtropical plant specie present in Macaronesia, particularly in the Canary Islands. It is the only plant in the world whose sap is red and not white, that is called "Dragon's Blood" and has been used for centuries and their use has been as varied. This tree has recently been discovered a new specie of dragon in the south of Gran Canaria, which has certain differences with the common dragon. This species are in the cliffs and slopes west of the island has been dubbed dragon tree of Gran Canaria.

A peculiarity is that on the island there is a flora with over 100 species that are unique in Gran Canaria. Some species of plants disappeared in the Mediterranean during the Ice Age, it has survived in the Canary Islands, making the Canaries a region of special botanical interest. Fortunately, as we have said before, there is much more than this, and Gran Canaria have diversity in terms of Habitat.
