Canarias on Foot joins GCN&A Family!

This year starts with great news: Canarias on Foot has joined Gran Canaria Natural and Active. We keep on growing to offer unforgettable experiences in the beautiful nature of #GranCanaria #GreatDestination.

Canarias on Foot team with the aim of bringing walkers to an authentic experience through our landscapes and people, with the help of local monitors. Driving along pathways, in which to discover not only scenery and wildlife but also customs, cuisine and its people, whenever possible.

As all of the activities of Canarias on Foot are centered around nature and protected areas, their commitments will always be to protect the enviroment and lead a sustainable way of life. Thus, their meet their two main objectives:transmit their love for nature and show the customs of our rural environment.

The founders of Canarias On Foot, Natalia Rodríguez Perera y Dunia Rosario Sánchez, were born and raised in these Lucky Islands and are in love with their culture and environment. This love for their land make them want to share with you its charm. They offer the opportunity to discover Gran Canaria in a new and spectacular way through these incredible experiences:

Camino de los Romeros Route: Agaete -San Pedro + Finca La Laja. 45€ per person. What we will be doing:

We will mostly be hiking along a “camino real” (royal path) which is an ancient path still used nowadays by local pilgrims every year. We will start hiking from the typical fishing village of Agaete using a local trail leading to the royal path along which we will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. From the top of the pine forest of Tamadaba “Pinar de Tamadaba” and the Valley of Agaete, we will also discover an amazing and ever-changing landscape. We will end our route in the neighbourhood of San Pedro where we will be visiting a beautiful farmhouse, La Laja, and will (meet a local guide who will explain) (learn) the whole growing and production process of coffee and wine. (Lastly,) we will finish the day enjoying (and tasting) some of these aromatic products, along with some delicious local cheese, sponge cake, and typical “chorizo” (sausage) of Teror. Undoubtedly a route to awaken the senses.

The Trade trail: El Sao- El Hornillo-Barranco Hondo. 45€ per adult and 35 € per child aged from 12 to 14. What we will be doing:

We will be hiking along a royal path which leaves the Barrio del Sao, which has been used since ancient times by the island's native people, and continued to used after the conquest until the early twentieth century. You will soon discover an amazing panoramic view of the valley, the ocean, mills, caves and a rich and varied environment. We will walk through one of the typical troglodyte villages still existing in Gran Canaria, El Hornillo, which is still inhabited today. We will keep hiking towards the Presa de los Pérez to finally reach Barranco Hondo. Then, we will pass by La Sagrada Cueva de Risco Caído and we will enter Barranco Hondo which leads to a notorious farmhouse, which was declared a cultural heritage site in 1993. Lastly, we will finish the day enjoying some local products, along with some delicious local cheese, toast bread, and olive, to finally we´ll return back to Agaete.

Pinewood trail: El Sao- El Hornillo-Lugarejo- Tamadaba. 45€ per adult. What we will be doing:

We will be hiking along a royal path which leaves the Barrio del Sao, which has been used since ancient times by native people. You will discover amazing panoramic views of the valley, the ocean, mills, caves and a rich and varied environment. We will walk through one of the typical troglodyte villages still existing in Gran Canaria, El Hornillo. From there, we will start to go to Lugarejos, where, depending on the time of the year, we might be able to visit a well-known Pottery Centre in Lugarejos, where we will find the oldest Pottery Oven in the Canary islands and one of the oldest in mainland Spain, after that we will gradually increase climbing up until we reach the Pinar de Tamadaba. The site was declared a natural reserve of the Biosphere and is a privilege spot with amazing panoramic views. If the weather conditions line up, we will be able to spot from the picturesque villages of La Aldea and Agaete. Once we have reached the summit of the mountain our route will end in this very place and we will return to Agaete.

Discover the beautiful municipality of Moya in Gran Canaria

Today we go to the north of the island to visit a town known for its biscuits, as well as for possessing a rich natural heritage. This is Moya, a town located 25 km from the capital, which attracts hundreds of tourists and residents for its diversity.

What can you do there?

In Moya we can find the "Charco de San Lorenzo", natural pools of clear water with more than 70 meters long to enjoy an energizing bath. In addition, it has spa, showers, toilets and restaurants famous for their fish. It’s great for spending a family day with friends, enjoying the infinity of the sea and the good climate that gives us the island.

On the other hand, it is unthinkable to visit Moya and not try one (or several) of its sweetmeats. The most famous are biscuits and "suspiros", although you can also find trouts and anise buns. No doubt this is the best option for the sweet tooth.

For the more intrepid, it is possible to visit the Special Natural Reserve of the "Barranco de Azuaje", where you will discover one of the most spectacular ravines of the entire island of Gran Canaria.

Moreover, you can visit the church of "Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria", a mill of gofio or the caves of "la Montañeta".
